Course Project

Objectives

This Course Project will provide you with practical experience in applying the skills, tools, and methodologies contained in the coursework for PROJ592. You will be generating a detailed project plan, including a project scope statement, work breakdown structure, schedule, cost estimates, and corrective action plans. In Part 1 (CP-1), you will select a project that requires sufficient detail to demonstrate your understanding of course concepts and provide a scope statement and WBS for this project. In Part 2 (CP-2), you will be provided other details for a new project.

In Part 3 (CP-3), you will create corrective actions plans for a project. For this part you will utilize project information and data provided to youto create a new project schedule, which will represent your project at a specific point during implementation

Very important:Each part of this project cannot be done in the last couple of days before it is due. You must start early, in week one for part 1, then 2 or 3 weeks, before each is due if you wish to do well on them. I will be available to address questions but cannot commit to sitting by my computer on the afternoon each is due to solve your problems for you. As this is a graduate level course following these recommendations is optional for the student. Also since this is a graduate level course grades earned for poorly done reports may reflect whether the work submitted meets the requirements of the project instructions.

Each of the three reports that you are to submit for the deliverables on this assignment are project reports to management. They should be written as such with necessary explanations so that management can follow the project progress. Just presenting data will not meet the requirements for the deliverables.

The Course Project requires modest use of Microsoft Project software that is available from the Student Software Store under Course Home. You may use either the 2010 or the 2013 version of MS Project–the differences are minor and do not impact the assignment.See also the Project Management Highlight Videos and tutorialsfrom the Student Resources tab to help you with the Course Project assignment.

Instructions and Guidelines

Course Project Part 1—Due Week 2
For Part 1 of the Course Project; assume you have been appointed project manager of a new project for your organization. Your first assignment is to create a scope statement and WBS for this project.

For this part of the Course Project, you select a project of your choosing. This selected project will be used in Project Part 1 and Project Part 2. I suggest you verify with your instructor the suitability of your selected project by the end of Week 1.

Select a project of personal interest. For example, select a project where you can identify realistic cost and scheduling concerns.

Examples:

  • Opening a small retail storefront or a franchise
  • Building a house or small commercial building
  • Flipping a house with major improvements
  • A new product development
  • An IT implementation project

When selecting your project, keep in mind the goal of CP-1 is to create a scope statement and WBS. In Project Part 2, you will need to create a budget and schedule for this project. Choose something relatively straightforward.

Do NOT pick a home purchase, a remodel, a wedding, or a reunion, as they really don’t satisfy the project criteria.

When developing the WBS and in part 2 when developing the cost and schedule there are rules:

  • All resources required to do the project will get paid an appropriate wage
  • There will be a minimum of 5 people on the project team with additional people required to get the work done
  • The project timeline will be a minimum of 6 months
  • The project budget will be a minimum of $100,000.

The CP-1 Project Proposal will be structured with the following sections.

  • Cover page including assignment, project title, course, and student contact information
  • Executive summarythat summarizes the content from the entire document with quantifiable highlights, such as overall cost, duration, and so on
  • Project scope statement describing the project as defined in Chapter 5 of PMBOK
  • WBS with three levels, proper grouping, indenting, and coding for 25 to 40 line items

(If your report is missing sections it will probably lose points.)

Submission Requirements

  • The scope statement should be written following guidelines for writing a scope as found in the PMBOK® Guide in Chapter 5.
  • The WBS should be created in MS Projects following standard indent and outdent practices used in WBS creation.
  • The assignment should be submitted as two files: one MS Project file containing the project WBS and one MS Word file for the scope statement, Executive summary, and other elements.
(Your MSP file should be saved so that the WBS will be visible when the file is opened.)
  • Don’t display your schedule by the day. Estimating by the day is fine and much work is best done that way. But when you display the Gantt chart it is too stretched out if you display it by the day. Condense the display with a week or month as the smallest unit on the chart.

Course Project Part 2—Due Week 4

In project Part 2, we create a schedule and accurate budget for your project. You need to focus on detailed cost estimating, scheduling, and cost justification. Estimatinga project budgetincludes cost estimates for each activity in the WBS with specific assumptions made during the estimating process, as well as quantities, unit prices, hourly rates for tasks, and accumulated totals. You must justify all of your costs; this includes direct, indirect, variable, fixed, and overhead. It is ok if these are all included in burdened labor rates.

This WBS must be created in MS Project using the automatic scheduling feature, indenting to produce subtasks, and allowing the software to create the WBS numbers.Numbers inserted in the file because the look right is not correct.

You should include the internal resources in your project plan with a cost assigned to them. As you may remember from PROJ586 and will see later this information is necessary to use earned value to track the project. This may not be an additional cost to your company but it is a cost of doing the project.

You must use a project estimating process. A functional estimate is based upon types of purchases and expenditures, and general labor for the time the entire project was in progress. If this is the way you estimate the cost of your project it is a functional budget estimate and you will not get credit for it.

The CP-2 Project Proposal will be structured with the following sections.

  • Cover page including assignment, project title, course, and student contact information
  • Executive summary summarizing the content from the entire document with quantifiable highlights, such as overall cost, duration, and so on
  • Project scope statement describing the project
  • Resource loaded WBS and schedule with proper grouping, indenting, and coding for approximately 25 to 40 line items. This also needs to include a work package, deliverables, and activities, activity relationships, activity durations, and activity resources. (This can be in an MS Project file.)
  • Cost estimatesfor each activity. Capital cost estimates should include building, franchise fees, equipment, and so on, if required for your project.
  • Estimating techniques used in developing the estimates in your budget. You should describe briefly the techniques you actually used to develop your project plan.
  • Cost assumptionsincluding a list of assumptions made when deriving your estimates. These are not facts about the details but general condition type assumptions which are likely out of the control of the project manager.

NOTE: Each section should include the detail as described above, along with a proper discussion about the included data as well as the project manager’s analysis and interpretation of the information.

Submission Requirements

  • The assignment should be submitted as two files: one MS Word file for the scope statement and documentation except for the WBS; and one MS Project file containing the project WBS, schedule, resource loading, and budget information.
  • CP-2 must include a cover page.
  • As a guide, the body of CP-2 should be between five and 10 pages in length (i.e., not including cover page, appendix, and MS Project file).
  • Submit the Word document and MSP file to theWeek 4: Course Project, Part 2Dropbox.

You must include summaries of the schedule, resources, and cost plan in the body of the report in the MS Word document. The three Gantt charts must be included in the body of the report.

Imbedded or linked files in the word document are not acceptable and will not be considered when grading the assignment. These often will not open and so I do not allow them.

Devry Proj 592 Week 7 Course Project Latest

Course Project Part 3—Due Week 7

For CP-3, we will leave CP-2 behind and start fresh. CP-3 is a performance review of a new indoor theme park project. You will utilize the provided project information and data to create a new project schedule. This will represent your project plan and then at a specific point during implementation. You will load the information and data into Microsoft Project where the data will serve as the basis for project monitoring and control and earned value analysis. The output of the analysis, combined with a control plan, will be used to support the continuation of your project. Please note that for this project we must maintain the original finish date even if it requires additional resources and money.

The starting data for Part 3 along with detailed instructions and hints are in a word document in doc sharing.

The CP-3 Project Performance Report will be structured with the following sections.

  • Cover page including assignment, project title, course, and student contact information
  • Table of Contents
  • Executive summary summarizing the content from the entire document with quantifiable highlights, such as overall project cost and schedule performance and estimate to completion, and making the pitch to project stakeholders to continue the project
  • Schedule 0: A MSP Gantt chart of the original (baseline) schedule that you created by in putting the initial data. All Gantt charts are a graphical representation of the schedule and NOT a table of dates and values. All Gantt charts and tables of task values must include the WBS number and the task name as columns on the left side.
  • Schedule 1an MSP Gantt chart schedule (required) that incorporates the provided project data, established baseline, and proper review date representing the anticipated 50% completion date.
  • Performance analysisutilizing earned value data to analyze the project cost and schedule performance
  • Estimate at completionincluding a forward-looking estimate of the project completion date and the final project costs
  • Cost and schedule control plan providing a corrective action plan to bring the project back in line with your project baseline
  • Revised estimate at completion including the corrective actions from the control plan along with the resulting cost impact and schedule impact
  • Schedule 2including revised MSP Gantt chart schedule (required) that reflects the impact of your corrective actions. This should meet the schedule requirements of the original project plan.
  • Conclusion: The final conclusion and description of the plan to complete the project with discussion of how you arrived at it.

NOTE: Each section should include the detail as described above, along with a proper discussion about the included data as well as the project manager’s analysis and interpretation of the information.

Submission Requirements

  • CP-3 must be submitted as a document in MS Word. Information or details created with other tools like Excel or MS Project, such as tables, charts, or graphs, must be incorporated into the MS Word file submittal as an inserted object, such as a JPEG.(For help with MS Project, see the Video Tutorial link below.) This is the format you would be expected to create in a business environment to submit to management. Failure to follow this requirement will result in deductions of points.
  • You should also submit as a reference document the Microsoft Project file you used to develop the project status described in your primary report. This is the file use to create schedule 2.
  • You may insert objects into the body of your paper to support your discussion if they are half a page or less. Larger items should be included in an appendix with appropriate references to this information.
  • Imbedded or linked files in the word document are not acceptable and will not be considered when grading the assignment. These often will not open and so I do not allow them.
  • As a guide, the body of CP-3 should be between five and 10 pages in length (i.e., not including cover page, TOC, appendix, etc.).
  • Submit the Word document and MS Project file to the Week 7: Course Project, Part 3Dropbox.
